<p>Herbal treatments are special medicines and treatments that are made from herbal plants.  Since they come from plants these treatments are often referred to as &#8220;all natural&#8221;.  Many people who prefer to stick with medicines and treatments that are considered natural because they think they will be better for them and their body.  These herbal treatments can include herbs from one type of plant or several types of plants.  The herbs come from various parts of the plant including the root, flower, seeds, fruits or even the leaves.</p>

<p>Most cancer treatment centers confirm that meditation as an alternative cancer treatment is beneficial. Where no one is claiming that meditation can cure cancer, it can greatly reduce some of the symptoms of the disease. The benefits are both mental and physical. <p>It has been proven that meditation can help with the stress, fear and depression associated with a cancer diagnosis. Certainly, an insight meditation practice would greatly reduce these mental symptoms of the disease. However, patients are sometimes taught to focus on an object or the use of a repetition of a phrase or words to help reduce symptoms. They may be instructed in deep breathing exercises or envisioning calming thoughts and scenarios. From a spiritual practice, envisioning can get quiet complex, but as an alternative cancer treatment, this form of meditation can be done in such a way that anyone can do it. Whether everyone will be open to meditation as a treatment is another thing, but forthose who are willing to explore an alternative, the results will likely be positive.</p>
<p>Meditation has also been reported to reduce chronic pain, lower heart rate. and decreased blood pressure and cholesterol levels. In order for meditation to work as an alternative treatment, most experts suggest that the patient will have to engage in the practice for at least seven weeks. Those willing to do it will see as much as a 30 percent decrease in some symptoms of the cancer. If a patient needs help finding a meditation expert, the American Cancer society offers a list of resources for most locations. In rural areas, health care providers may be able to help a patient find an individual in the community that can guide meditation.</p>

<p>Ayurveda is an ancient Indian philosophy that incorporates both  proactive and healing therapies for improved health. More than a health  care regimen, Ayurveda is a lifestyle choice frequently promoted by  alternative health practitioners. <p>Ayurveda is based on the concept that each individual is capable of  controlling his or her own life, health, and physical and mental  restoration. The three different types, called &#8220;doshas&#8221;, are Vata,  Pitta, and Kapha. An Ayurveda consultant will analyze a person&#8217;s skin,  hair, taste preferences, eating habits and sleep patterns to determine  their dosha.</p>
<p>With the idea that each dosha has different requirements in order to  achieve proper balance and thus maintain good health, the diet, exercise  and meditation routines are specific to each individual. Each person  also has specific emotional needs, and their diet, exercise and  meditation programs will work together to balance these needs.</p>
<p>Meditation is an important component of Ayurveda, especially for people  who have stressful lifestyles that affect their physical and mental  health. Meditation helps the mind overcome the effects of both physical  and mental stress, leading to a better balance and fewer physical  manifestations.</p>
<p>While it is not intended as a cure-all or a substitute for life-saving  medications, many adherents of Ayurveda report fewer physical problems  and a reduced need for over-the-counter and prescription medications.  Even people in top physical condition practice Ayurveda for the  emotional and mental well-being it provides without chemical or  artificial enhancements.</p>

<p>Modern medicine is based on treating a disease or symptom with a  scientifically proven drug, procedure, or surgical remedy. These  therapies have been proven through carefully controlled and regulated  studies, and people generally accept them as safe and effective. But the  idea of proving effectiveness through a study is a relatively recent  development in the medical world. Innumerable doctors and healers have  been treating patients successfully for millennia, without the benefit  of scientifically proven cures.</p>
<p>Because the scientific community requires an explanation of &#8220;proof&#8221;,  it is less likely to recommend an alternative therapy, even when  clinical studies show its effectiveness. Numerous medical studies  conducted in the 1970s through 1990s showed that imagery and  visualization techniques were effective in improving remission rates,  reducing pain, and enhancing traditional medical treatments.</p>
<p>Patients who were receiving traditional medical treatments were taught  to visualize things like diseased cells shrinking and dying, pain  disappearing, or healthy cells growing and flourishing. A significant  percentage of patients actually experienced physical manifestations of  the outcome they visualized. The control groups that did not practice  visualization had lower success rates.</p>
<p>There have also been studies and clinical trials that demonstrate the  effectiveness of meditation on lowering blood pressure, incidence of  strokes, and chemical and behavioral addiction relapses. Test subjects  who meditated also had lower rates of surgical complications and better  immune system function.</p>
<p>Although the results are dramatic, science can&#8217;t explain the mind-body  connection or exactly how it works. Because of this, these therapies  are considered &#8220;alternative&#8221; and are not prescribed by traditional  health care providers as a primary course of action.</p>

<p>No matter how hard you try, you will never find anything that can qualify as empty and vacant when you are meditating. This is the rule of the pink elephant and is a very big problem faced by all individuals who try to mediate. So, what steps should you take?</p>
<p>Who says that you have to start focusing on emptiness at the very beginning? Why don&#8217;t you create a blackboard in your mind and draw images and figures on the same. You can then mentally erase each and every image individually. You can do this in a gradual and faced manner.</p>
<p>Soon, you would have wiped the entire blackboard clean. What remains is emptiness. The best part is that you would have meditated for 10 to 15 minutes by the time you reach the stage of the empty blackboard. <p>You must have heard about stories of how those who meditate very often are constantly happy. Well, it is very difficult to believe that anybody can be constantly happy. What if one falls down and is hurt bad? Will one still be happy? This often leads to illogical questions that make it very difficult to understand how meditation works.</p>
<p>Well, studies conducted on Buddhist monks with more than 10,000 hours of meditation indicate that certain parts of their brains are changed fundamentally. That part of the brain which is supporting the emotional network is affected and the end result is that the person is constantly empathic about things around him or her.</p>
<p>Have you ever met a person who has complete control over the surroundings and never seems to get flustered? No matter what you say, he or she has something nice to tell as a reply. Well, you probably met a person who has meditated for so long that he or she has changed the brain fundamentally.</p>
<p>Well, this has confirmed the longstanding suspicion that meditation actually helps us change all those things that nature has made unchangeable. Some people say that it is impossible to change the basic nature. Well, that is no longer the case.</p>

Only a person who does not have time will understand how difficult it can be to do many things within a specific time span. However, for middle aged mother who has to handle the home, kids, work and household chores, lack of time is a real problem indeed.</p>
<p>How to overcome this problem? Well, do not focus on achieving the goal of meditating for a specific time everyday as if it is a task. If you reduce medication into a chore, you will automatically lose interest. Rather, meditation should be that time span which helps you relax.</p>
<p>No environment<br />
If you have kids running all over the house, you obviously will not be in a position to meditating peace and quiet. So, how should you proceed? Who says that you need to meditate at home only? You can meditate in your canteen. You can meditate in your car after you have parked the same in your garage.</p>
<p>This is not the ideal solution but it is much better than not meditating at all. Remember, the means and method of meditation does not matter as long as you enjoy the ultimate result. If you meditate in the car and if you feel relaxed after a tough day&#8217;s work your job is done.</p>
<p>As you get more and more relaxed, you will realize that it is possible to meditate even under noisy circumstances. From that point onwards, the atmosphere will never trouble you.</p>

However, controlling a weak mind is always a very big problem. So, you should always try to give yourself good chance of focusing on your meditation when you are beginning to concentrate.</p>
<p>For starters, make use of meditation tools and aids like music. Do not presume that it is simply a fashionable accessory. One of the advantages of classical music is that it gives you something to focus on. Asking your mind to focus on some abstract or imaginative concept can be very difficult.</p>
<p>The mind will automatically come up with various alternatives. The end result is that you will spend your meditation time discussing the pros and cons of various tools and methods of meditation. The only point here is that all discussion will be taking place inside your mind.</p>
<p>Your desire to have some mental peace would be left unfulfilled. So, how should you proceed? Have an external object that you can use as a focusing aid. It can even be a clock which makes a distinctive loud noise. You just have to focus on the clock and the sound.</p>
<p>The trick is to teach your mind to focus on just one thing at a time. This is the reason why meditation helps in improvement of concentration. It is only when you start mediating will you realize how wildly your mind works. To control it will take time but it is not impossible.</p>

<p>You should focus on your goal and let it flow. The initial few days will be very tough. You will probably end up focusing on your meditation goal for just a few minutes in an hour. However, you will have to learn to hear the silence. You will have to learn to ignore the various distractions that your mind throws up.</p>
<p>Once it is done, you will realize that your ability to focus on the goal increases. Your capacity will remain the same even if you change the meditation goal. If your goal is to visualize a clock, you will realize that it becomes sharper and clearer on a daily basis.</p>

<p>This may sound contradictory and illogical but that is how meditation works. The mind is far more powerful than we believe or know. Hence, do not be surprised if your mind tries to test you by determining your commitment and your discipline.</p>
<p>Of course, there may be a possibility of some hidden worry in your mind which may be preventing you from focusing on the job on hand. Rather than trying to prove your mind and discover the same, simply let it flow. You will realize that the problem automatically comes up when your mind relaxes.</p>

<p>Why is it important to meditate? You do not have to work in a high stressed job or live high stressed lifestyle to meditate. Rather, each and every person should meditate because it is very essential to keep the mind sharp and alert at all times.</p>
<p>Are you of the opinion that your mind is sharp? Well, we probably carry out a lot of physical activities everyday. From waking up and getting off the bed to brushing our teeth-there is virtually no activity during the day which does not involve physical exertion. Does this mean that we should not exercise or go to the gym?</p>
<p>Simple activities like walking or lifting things are not going to stretch our body. If you want to avoid becoming overweight, we should exercise regularly. In the same way, the mental activities that we carry out on a daily basis are not sufficient to keep our mind agile.</p>
<p>The work that we do is often categorized into different compartments and is reduced to a mechanical task. We do not concentrate and use our mind to the real extent for more than a few minutes in every hour of work. In such a scenario, is it surprising that the mind becomes sluggish and slow?</p>
<p>In such a scenario, completely skipping physical activity and focusing on a single thought and forcing the mind to concentrate is obviously going to yield benefits. This is the reason why you should meditate. Meditation is the mental equivalent of pumping ions at the gym. Needless to say, it does not matter how old you are and what work you do.</p>
<p>If you want to keep yourself in good shape, mentally speaking, you should meditate regularly. The duration of meditation and the method of concentration should depend on your comfort levels. Of course, there are certain traditional solutions which work for most individuals. You can give it a try or develop your own technique. The choice is yours.</p>

<p>Have you ever heard the term “alternative medicine?” This is a term coined in Western culture and encompasses medical techniques and treatments that don’t fall within the standard realm of medicine, as conventionally practiced by doctors and health services.</p>
<p>According to the American National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), the following techniques and treatments fall under the term alternative medicine:</p>

•    Herbalism<br />
•    Acupuncture<br />
•    Homeopathy<br />
•     Yoga<br />
•    Hypnosis<br />

<p>While these techniques fall under the category of alternative medicine, even old traditional wive’s tales can fall under the term. For example, there are supposedly various ways to determine the gender of your baby prior to conceiving, such as by a diet rich in potassium in order to have a baby boy.</p>
<p>A study called &amp;quot;The prevalence of complementary/alternative medicine in cancer: a systematic review&amp;quot; (Cancer 83 (4): 777–82) published in August of 1998 revealed that, in 13 countries, approximately 31 percent of cancer patients used some form of alternative medicine as a treatment for their terminal illness.</p>
<p>Alternative medicines may be based in traditional medical practices and may even incorporate some elements of them. Some are often rooted in folk knowledge and spiritual belief systems. What some people term as “new age” often encompasses newly discovered methods in approaches to alternative medicine. Truly, there is no one defining characteristic for a treatment or technique that makes it “alternative” other than the fact that it is likely not something your doctor would prescribe or recommend for you.</p>
<p>The reason that alternative medicine has little clout in the traditional medical world is because most techniques and treatments lack recurring evidence to support their effectiveness. The irony is, if scientific methods and studies show a technique or treatment of alternative medicine to be effective, it then becomes mainstream and added to the realm of traditional medical practices, meaning that it is no longer considered alternative medicine.</p>
